Copenhagen, Denmark

August 1, 2010

This is the only "new" country we will have on this trip.  Neither Adele nor I had ever been to Denmark before.
The ship docked in a commercial area on the outskirts of the city.  Joining us were four other very large cruise ships.  Although the ships were scattered around the very big commercial port of Copenhagen, we were in a bit of a panic thinking of the crowds we might find.  We again decided to take a hop-on hop-off bus to see the sights and get oriented.  We got prime front-row seats on the top of the double-decker bus.  Since the weather was beautiful, we rolled the canvas roof back and headed for the one-hour tour.  This time, we had headphones and the narration was excellent so we mostly knew what we were seeing.  The first thing we didn't see was the "little mermaid" statue.  Apparently it is in Shanghai for an exposition.  I couldn't (and still can't) understand why they don't have a copy of it to send on tour.  They have had to replace it any number of times over the years due to vandalism.
Our tour continued past numerous old and interesting structures.  I suppose I am getting blasé, but Copenhagen seemed like just another Western European city.  It was clean and neat with lots of statues and parks, but somehow colorless.  I suppose if we had several days to spend we would have warmed up to the place.
When the bus got back to the ship, Adele got off to do a little shopping in souvenir stores at a small tourist center near the ship.  I stayed on the ship an went back to a couple of repeat stops, got off, and walked back to the ship.  It was a pleasant walk and I got a lot of photos.
Back at the ship we looked out our veranda and saw some parking places with mysterious metal barricades in the middle of them.  We were so curious; we got back off the ship and checked them out.  It turned out that they were electronically controlled devices that only let authorized people park there.  I thought it was very clever.
Sailing out of Copenhagen was not nearly as interesting as sailing through the fjords of Norway and Iceland since the land is very flat with lots of houses and apartments.
